First day...
|
Aside from not sleeping very well last night, the first day at the new gig went very well! Working with a good group who seem to have their stuff together! It was nice getting back to SQL, Query Analyzer, and Cold Fusion. Not a very productive day, but got to dig into some code! Was very nice to be home just about 4:45 PM!! Man, that hasn't happened in a long time unless I took off early for a doctor appointment. Spent some time in traffic for the construction on HWY 8 and BS'ed in the parking lot with a co-worker for 10 minutes, or else I woulda been home earlier:)

Explanation: I finally quit my steenkin job!! I start the new gig tomorrow. I was ambivalent about writing about it in my blog, but what the hell:)
I truly hope for the sake of all the friends that I have left behind at QuadraMed in Eagle River, WI, the office stays open for many, many years to come. I further hope, for them, that my decision to leave bites me in the ass. It was hard to just walk away from my friends like that. But, I could not continue to live with the uncertainty that our Chief Executive Ogre, Larry English, continued to foster. The outsourcing of the developer jobs in Eagle River to a bunch of freakin communists is sickening to me. The lack of communications in such a large organization was unconscionable. The closing of an office and the affect it had on 80+ people right before Christmas was tragic. The firings that occurred earlier this year were probably needed, to a degree. Unfortunately, some of the wrong people were fired! I could think of a few executives whose salaries we could definitely live without. How is it that Larry can collect nearly a million dollars a year in salary and not have a single major sale? Accountability needs to come from the top, if you have the balls to accept it, Larry does not! Larry would push accountability down onto the peons and fire them, or cast blame upon them. I do hope for nothing but the best for my colleagues. Wondering if every press release that hit my inbox was going to contain a pink slip was just too much for me. You have to look out for Number One! Number One is the wife and kids, not myself, their well-being is more important than mine. Sorry fellow co-workers, you were always number four or five. I'll hold on to my stocks in case you guys can turn it around and make me some money in the end!! Remember, as a shareholder, you're working for me now!! LOL!!!
All that said, I am returning to something I loved doing! I'm returning to Internet Programming again, more on that later, maybe. Beats the hell out of programming in ancient technology:) I'll also be able to keep my skills fresh in all the latest technologies. It has been hard to do on own for the last 2.5 years.

Eagle River Beer Festival Website - v2.0
|
Well, finished up some work for the Eagle River Beer Festival! Rearranged the site with the help of Bill at Summers/North video productions in Eagle River. Added slideshow, screen saver, contact us form, links to breweries that had web pages and added some other links to "required beer sites". There will be a few more additions coming at a later date. But I think it looks pretty good!!

LONDON (Reuters) - The word "fail" should be banned from use in British classrooms and replaced with the phrase "deferred success" to avoid demoralizing pupils, a group of teachers has proposed.
Members of the Professional Association of Teachers (PAT) argue that telling pupils they have failed can put them off learning for life.
A spokesman for the group said it wanted to avoid labeling children. "We recognize that children do not necessarily achieve success first time," he said.
"But I recognize that we can't just strike a word from the dictionary," he said.
The PAT said it would debate the proposal at a conference next week.

The heat wave has broken...
|
It made it into the mid 70's here today! When the sun came out it would hit near 80, but for the most part it stayed real nice! Had some storms last night, got some pics of trees across the road on my morning drive. Storm came through at 3:30 AM. At 7:30 there was still a bunch of stuff across the lanes, including an entire tree that blocked the road. I was able to squeak by on the shoulder, but it was kinda of scary cuz, a few other peeps had done the same thing before me and the traffic was knocking down the shoulder. I was real happy I had the little Yota. Maybe I will get those pics on the MoBlog tonight.

Weird hearing something you have done being mentioned by other peeps, but Jeff at Buzzcat.net gave another shout out to this website. He liked the Weasel List and made mention of it on show #94, at just about the 44th minute. Sounds like he and Jenny have a blast doing the show. Would be fun to just hang out with those guys and pound a couple of growlers as they do the show!! Maybe someday!! I added a permanent link to Buzzcat.net in the "Fun" section of the links. These guys get trashed and play old tunes, what more could you want!?! In #94 they had some snippets from Steve Martin's, A Wild and Crazy Guy. Man, it was like instant flashback to my old tape recorder in the late 70's early 80's. Cool!
Getting a bit of a buzz goin on the summer hummers tonight (spell checked with Word 2003). This makes 6 to 7 days in the freakin 90's in a row. In my un-sober state there were 232,008 spelling errors in here. Took me 30 minutes to post my 15 seconds of fame. Crappers!

How dumb am I?
|
Pick one of the hottest days in two years to dust off the bike and go for a ride:) Quitting smoking was a HUGE help on this ride!! I know because Michelle, kids, and I took the route that I took today a couple years back and I had to stop two or three times. Only one stop today for water and a 5 minute rest break in the shade. Today was much hotter, nearly 90 if not above, and I am carrying more weight.
Watched some sandhill cranes out in the field beyond the gate. Tried to take a picture, but, my Podunk camera phone could not capture them, they were a bit too far.

I bitched about the heat yesterday. Today, Sammi gave me a poem to put out here, from a collection of poems by Shel Silverstein, all copyrights belong to the author. Reprinted without their permission, but hey, they'd understand, it's freakin HOT!!!

I think I will be moving one of the kids upstairs and take over a lower-level bedroom as my new office!! It is nice and cool downstairs tonight. Probably only a few degrees cooler but, much more comfortable.

She's a hot one again today! It didn't make it over 90 in all of 2004. It made it over 90 once in 2003. Weather dude said we were at 4 or 5 today. Would be nice if we would get that nice early evening storm to cool things off a little bit, but no dice. Just hot! I even turned off the computer last night so it wouldn't run today, no cam images of the tree in the backyard. Oh stop it! I know you're broken hearted, deal with it! Big-Ass-Dog has something like 7 fans in it. When she gets wound up, I think it is gonna levitate, I wrap a bungy cord over it when playing Doom 3, just in case. Sounds like a good night to grab Pocket-Dog, head to the basement, and get in front of the big screen!!

Summer Hummer...
|
Woohoo... It is freakin hot today!! Since Michelle and I have been low-carbing, I have been doing my best to stay away from beer and margaritas. Well, I have found a new best friend:-) Crystal Light and Vodka, with a fist full of ice in the old smoothie maker, makes me plenty happy (never mind the typos, if any, I am a bit buzzzzzed). Only problem is drinking them fast enough before all the ice melts off. That is a fun little drinking game, kind of a challenge! Drink fast enough to keep ice in the cocktail yet not too fast to get a brain freeze. I am up to my 342nd brain freeze for the day, hehe.
My normal low carb drink is rum and diet coke. But I really wanted to make use of the smoothie maker. Crystal Light and Vodka is pretty good, I thought that sugar free crap would make me puke; thankfully I am hurl free to this point. However, it is only 8 PM, plenty of time:)
Anyone else out there have a suggestion for low carb alchy treats?? Post it in the comments!! I need some variety!

Thanks to a Net friend, Dolf, over in The Netherlands and his Deviation blog I've had the pleasure lately of swapping some e-mails with the guy who runs Buzzcat.net. It's pretty cool! He has a weekly radio show, The BZT Weekly, that you can listen to from his website. Hey, have a listen to #93, someone you know may be mentioned in the first few minutes:-) He seems to have a real blast doing it! He plays some really good old tunes! I've listened to quite a few of them and have been pretty impressed. He has a good radio voice. My Grandmother once told me that I had a good radio voice. I think what she really was saying was, I was too frickin ugly for TV. Be sure to check out his Drunklist on the site! His copyright line is pretty cool too, 1967 - 2005, good idea!
Another neat thing about the host, Jeff Archer Black, is that he lives by the Tyranena Brewery (Beware, nasty FrontPage Java buttons that may freak out your browser at this site) in Lake Mills, WI. He actually noticed that BP was wearing a Tyranena t-shirt on the Paul Page. He sounds like a man who likes his suds and brandy!! Can't wait to hook up with him some day for a couple growlers of good Tyranena beer!!

Eagle River Beer Festival 2005 - Redux
|
I have been doing some volunteer work for the organizers of the ERBF and their website. Between their schedule and mine, it has been hard to meet up and get the slide show of pictures onto their site. You can check out the slideshow here.
I also used the pictures to create a screen saver for them. The screen saver is about a 7-8 megabyte executable. The executable basically unpacks the archive and puts it in the Windows folder, along with a supporting DLL. You can download the screen saver here. See how many times you can spot BP, BP, and BB...
Was playing with the Picasa2 software to generate the slide show and it also lets you create cool little collages from your photos. I created this one from the pics they gave me. Pretty cool!

4th of July Parade Pics

Hope everyone has a nice and SAFE 4th of July weekend. Don't be stupid and blow off yer finger tips! The kids and I are heading for the great metropolis of Monico tonight. We're going to watch their fireworks and hang with some old friends. One of which, Kerri, just celebrated her 40th birthday a few days before I celebrated mine. She's REALLY old!!
Unfortunately, Michelle has to work the next 4 nights. She will probably be real busy! Nice weather, lots of people in town, plus the party they are having downtown will lead to some drunk and disorderly arrests for sure:-)

SUNSPOTS GALORE: Only a few days ago the sun was completely blank, but now it is peppered with fast-growing sunspots. So far these active regions have produced no strong solar flares, but this could change if their dynamic growth continues. Visit spaceweather.com for movies of the growing 'spots and safe solar observing tips.
REMINDER: Far from Earth, NASA's Deep Impact spacecraft is about to poke a hole through the crust of Comet Tempel 1. When? July 3rd at 10:52 p.m. PDT (July 4th at 0552 UT). A plume of gas and dust emerging from the hole could cause the comet to brighten so much that sky watchers on Earth can see it through binoculars or even with the unaided eye from dark-sky sites. Observers in the western United States, Hawaii, Mexico and parts of Central and South America are favored. From those places the comet hangs in the southwestern sky after sunset on July 3rd--at the right place and time to view the impact. If the comet does brighten, it will look like a faint fuzzy smudge not far from the bright star Spica. Visit spaceweather.com for a sky map and observing tips.
Maybe we'll get to see some aurora action and some comet action. Cool stuff!!
